When we come together for Reach and Rise®, we get the chance to talk about our troubles and triumphs, play music, and create. We thought this pour painting gave a glimpse into one of our meetings: We're all so strikingly different, but when we come together, we make something unique and beautiful.
Did you know the Protea flower represents bravery? Being a part of Reach and Rise® has taught me that being courageous can mean a lot of different things, like trying new things or opening up to new people. Being brave doesn't have to mean being bold, which is why I chose to use pastel colors.
We used this project to show that all colors are important and were surprised when we melted this one and saw all the muddy colors. Then we brought out the daisies and glued them on – now it makes much more sense – ALL the colors in the pallet were used and each one became immensely important to the whole outcome.
As any artist will tell you, creating is not only a means to make something beautiful, but also a channel to healthfully and productively release and express emotions. In Reach and Rise®, we believe there are no "good" or "bad" feelings. Each is an experience that we can learn from and then "recycle" as a reminder of how to thoughtfully process emotions, and not just ignore or allow to build up.
Each emotion may be represented by a different color, that comes together, and melt away again, recycling over and over allowing us to become more self-aware or sensitive to the feelings of others.
My paintings can go together or be displayed on their own, and you can hang them any way that makes you happy. In Reach and Rise®, I'm learning that sometimes you get to make the rules, and other times people make them for you. Both are good and it is best when there is a balance. This time, it is up to you.
My favorite times of day are sunrise and sunset. Before I made these paintings, I paid close attention to what colors I saw during the sunrise and sunset and decided to use them to create these. I think it is interesting how you can take colors that create one thing (like the sunrise), mix them, and they make something completely different.
Mixing primary colors is what gives us the complete spectrum of colors. When I made these red, white, and blue paintings, it wasn’t exactly my intention to come out with something that looked purple—like the star. However, I think the purple here is a good reminder that we can mix two things and still end up with something accidentally pretty.
